Christian Zapatka Architect, PLLC is an award-winning architecture firm specializing in residential architecture in the Washington metropolitan area. Seeking to fuse the best of both modern and traditional design in order to create classic, timeless structures, the firm designs new houses as well as additions to and renovations of existing houses.

In 2003, the firm was one of five winners in the AIA Rowhouse of the Future Competition and presented their winning design at the National Building Museum. More recently, the firm was invited to participate in the History Channel’s Future Cities Competition and presented their work at Washington’s Union Station.  The firm’s work has been published in numerous publications including The Modern Townhouse (Harper Collins, 2006), Luxury Bathrooms (Harper Collins, 2008), The Washington Post, The Washingtonian, Washington Spaces, Beautiful Homes, Home & Design and Architecture DC.  Christian Zapatka’s practice has been featured as a cover story for the Washington, DC newspapers, The Downtowner and The Georgetowner.  In 2019, Zapatka was named a top designer by Home & Design.

 

Founded in 2000, the firm has completed over 100 projects in the Washington, DC area. The firm is committed to creating comprehensive architectural designs which integrate both site design and interior design.

 

 

Christian Zapatka, Principal

Christian Zapatka is a member of the American Institute of Architects and a Fellow of The American Academy in Rome. After earning a master’s degree in architecture from Princeton University where he was awarded the Norton Prize for excellence in design, he apprenticed for two years with Michael Graves. In 1991, he was awarded the Rome Prize in architecture and spent a year at The American Academy in Rome as a fellow in architecture.

 

 

While teaching architectural design and history for seven years at Princeton, Columbia and the University of Michigan, Zapatka wrote two books and numerous academic publications. His book, The American Landscape (Princeton Architectural Press, 1996) was awarded an AIA International Book Award in 1998.  Zapatka is a member of the Committee of 100 on the Federal City and a member of the Cosmos Club in Washington DC.
